Otoplasty Candidacy

Like any surgery, otoplasty is only recommended to patients who meet certain criteria:

Age

Otoplasty candidates are usually children aged 4 to 14 whose ears protrude. However, cosmetic ear surgery can also benefit adults.

Damage

If your earlobe has been stretched or damaged, then you may also be a candidate for otoplasty. Many patients who have worn heavy earrings for years or no longer wear gauges can benefit from this treatment. If an injury has damaged the cartilage of your ear, this can also be addressed.

Appearance

Consultation

Before you or your child can schedule the surgery, you will meet Dr. Cohen for a consultation. Our office is located in Orange, CA, close to Newport Beach. He will examine your ears and go over your medical history to determine if you are an ear surgery candidate.

Preparing for Surgery

If you are cleared for surgery, we will take every measure to make sure your otoplasty procedure is comfortable. Typically, adults are given a sedative and local anesthesia, while children who undergo otoplasty at our Orange County practice are administered general anesthesia.

Ear Refinements

Usually, your plastic surgeon will begin the surgery by making an incision behind the ear. Then, he will proceed to reshape the exposed cartilage and remove any excess skin or tissue. At this point, the ear can also be pinned and repositioned more closely to the head.

Closing the Incisions

Dr. Cohen will end the surgery by closing the incisions with sutures. Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will go home to recover that day. If you are an adult undergoing this procedure, make sure to arrange a ride home from our Orange office.

The Ear Surgery Recovery Process Three Important Components

Recovery Time

After your plastic surgery treatment, you will need some time to recover. Because there are several types of ear surgeries, the recovery time may vary. Usually, it is around 6 weeks, with results starting to appear within 2 to 3 weeks. You should be able to resume nonstrenuous work within a week.

Bandages

You or your child will need to wear a protective bandage or wrap as you heal. You will continue to wear a bandage for up to 10 days. Dr. Cohen will determine when you can stop wearing the bandage during a follow-up appointment at our Orange, CA, office.

Return Visit

Dr. Cohen will always be here when you need him — starting with removing your stitches at our Orange County office. He will also examine the area to ensure that it is healing properly. Ask as many questions as you want during your ear surgery recovery.
