Eyelid Surgery Side Effects
For our patients in Orange County, eyelid surgery can correct visible signs of aging, improve the appearance of sagging under and upper-eye tissue, and revitalize the aesthetic of the face. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are side effects involved. The team at THE SKIN CENTERx educates its patients on what to expect after treatment. Eyelid surgery side effects are common, but we believe that it is better for you to understand exactly what is involved with undergoing a procedure so you can determine if cosmetic treatment is right for you.
About Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is recommended for patients who desire an improvement in the appearance of their tired, droopy, puffy eyes. The cosmetic surgery procedure is designed to remove excess loose skin and tighten the tissue surrounding the eyes. Blepharoplasty surgery can be combined with a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures to make your entire face look younger. Eyelid surgery is also best suited for patients whose vision is obstructed due to sagging lids. Our Orange County plastic surgery specialist, Dr. William Cohen, can determine if eyelid surgery is right for you by performing a thorough evaluation of your current medical history, conducting an analysis of the tissue that surrounds your eyes, and discussing your cosmetic goals for treatment.
Side Effects of Eyelid Surgery
Most patients believe that the advantages of eyelid surgery outweigh the side effects of the procedure. While most side effects of the procedure are temporary, some can pose permanent damage. The most common eyelid surgery side effects include:
- Swelling: Swelling is a common side effect associated with most surgical procedures. Swelling tends to form around the incision area. Immediately following surgery, a cold compression or ice pack may be placed over the midsection of your face to minimize the inflammation.
- Blurred vision: Swelling may cause blurred vision to occur throughout the duration of your recovery. If your vision continues to remain clouded or blurred, even after your eyelids have completely healed, it is critical that you consult with a medical professional.
- Persistent pain: Because the tissue around your eyes is reshaped during surgery, many patients feel tightening and soreness around their eyes following treatment. As the anesthesia wears off, you may feel mild and persistent pain near your eyes. Dr. Cohen prescribes patients medication to take, which helps manage any post-operative pain that may occur.
- Scarring: Scarring should be at a minimum, however, depending on the skill of the facial plastic surgeon, your results will vary. Most incisions are placed within natural folds of the skin to camouflage scarring.
- Eye Conditions: Some patients develop dryness, burning of the eyes, or excessive tearing following surgery or throughout the duration of their recovery process. Most eye conditions can be improved or controlled using medicated eye drops.
