Eyelid Surgery Statistics
Aging can have a physical and aesthetic impact on the body. While it usually takes many years for physical changes to develop, aesthetic changes often become obvious sooner than most people expect. Since the face is continuously exposed to sunlight, wind, and other harsh environmental elements, this is where most signs of aging start.
The eyes are especially susceptible, since they are surrounded by such thin, delicate skin. Eyelid surgery tightens and smooths the skin around the upper and lower eyes to drastically reduce the signs of aging. Because of the overwhelming success of eyelid surgery, this procedure has remained a popular cosmetic treatment.
Here, experienced plastic surgeon William C. Cohen presents eyelid surgery statistics to provide our Orange County, CA patients with a little more insight to this procedure.
How Many People Undergo Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery routinely ranks among the top five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures. The most recent data collected by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for the year 2016 shows that eyelid surgery was the fourth most performed plastic surgery procedure that year.
In 2016, 209,000 eyelid surgeries were performed, which was a 2 percent increase from the number of eyelid surgeries performed in 2015.
When broken down by age, eyelid surgery was actually the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure among patients aged 55 and older.
Who Benefits from Eyelid Surgery?
Eyelid surgery is a procedure that can benefit men and women. Saggy, heavy skin on the upper eyelids and undereye bags are common among males and females. However, statistics show that the overwhelming majority of eyelid surgery patients in 2016 were female.
According to statistics, 178,000 women underwent eyelid surgery in 2016, as compared to just 30,958 men. Since the total number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed on women in 2016 was nearly 1.5 million, compared to just around 215,000 cosmetic surgery procedures performed on males, the difference between the number of male and female eyelid surgery patients is understandable.
Regarding age, eyelid surgery was most popular among patients aged 55 and older. During 2016, more than 100,000 eyelid surgery patients fell into this age group. Not far behind were patients aged 40 to 54, who accounted for around 80,000 eyelid surgery patients for the year. In patients younger than this, we see a dramatic drop in eyelid surgery procedures.
Patients between the ages of 30 and 39 make up just 6 percent of the total eyelid surgery procedures, and patients aged 20 to 29 account for just 2 percent of total eyelid surgeries performed.
Is Eyelid Surgery Right for Me?
Although statistics show that eyelid surgery remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, not all patients are ideal candidates for this treatment. Dr. Cohen is careful in evaluating patients to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for eyelid surgery.
In addition, it is important that eyelid surgery help patients achieve their specific aesthetic goals, and that patients have realistic expectations for surgical results.
