How Gland Removal can Help
Our compassionate physician has the skill and experience needed to help patients who are living with a hormone imbalance or cancer of the thyroid. In many cases, surgical removal of all or part of the thyroid may be the ideal form of treatment to ensure your optimal health. Please learn more about how Dr. William C. Cohen of Advanced ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery performs the thyroidectomy procedure in Orange County.
Why Choose Thyroidectomy
A thyroidectomy can successfully treat a number of complications for the ideal candidate:
- Thyroid cancer is the most common reason for surgical removal of the thyroid. Complete or partial thyroidectomy is a preferred course of treatment for patients with thyroid cancer.
- Noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid may cause patients with a larger gland to experience trouble breathing or swallowing, or otherwise impair function of the throat or esophagus. In some cases, the goiter, or enlarged gland, may be the cause of hyperthyroidism.
- Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid that produces too much of the thyroid hormone and causes complications, is also treated by thyroidectomy when it is unresponsive to drug therapy.
The Thyroidectomy Procedure
The thyroid refers to an endocrine gland located near the base of your neck. Our doctor employs the minimally invasive, video-assisted thyroidectomy technique to ensure the smoothest surgery possible. Patients will be administered general anesthesia and remain unconscious while in the operating room.
The thyroid removal procedure involves the use of several monitors on your body to regulate heart rate, blood pressure and blood oxygen levels. The surgeon will then make a small incision in the front of your neck, and use endoscopic instruments to facilitate the removal of all or part of your thyroid gland (this will depend on your pre-determined treatment plan).
If you have elected thyroidectomy as a result of thyroid cancer, Dr. Cohen will also likely examine or possibly remove lymph nodes that surround your thyroid. The thyroid removal procedure generally takes a few hours.
